What Is Your Level Of Commitment?

Author Ken Blanchard said, “There's a difference between interest and commitment. When you're interested in something, you do it only when it's convenient. When you're committed to something, you accept no excuses, only results.”
When I read this, it struck home. It made me really reflect on my levels of commitment in different areas of my life. Areas like my business, the community I live in, my family, my walk in faith, and so many other things. I began to look at the time I was spending on things that interest me but to which I was not committed. Should I remove a commitment because of a lack of interest or dig deep because I have made a commitment?
Some good things in our lives come easily. They don’t take much effort or commitment to be fruitful. But other things, well, are different.

I remember a hike on the Appalachian Trail. It rained all night. We had gotten soaked before stopping for the evening. We pitched tents in the rain and did the best we could through the heavy downpours. The next day we packed up and started hiking toward Big Hump and Little Hump. The fog and rain rolled in and we were hiking a trail that was like a cattle path. The water was running down this path and it was slick. Each step you could feel your feet slip just a little. The trail to our break led us to Big Hump. We couldn’t see but about 30 feet in front of us.
It was miserable. I wondered why I chose to do this. It was uncomfortable. There were much better ways to spend my weekend. I dreaded each step and it even became painful from all of the muscle effort. My slipping feet made my whole body tense up to hopefully stop me from losing footing and falling.
I made a choice to keep moving forward into the muck. The last mile to the top of Big Hump was a climb through all of the same stuff. I knew I was close, but still couldn’t see the end.
When I finally made it to the top and sat upon the rocks, the rain stopped and the clouds broke. It was one of the best views I have ever seen. Then when I looked back at what we came through, I could see the WHOLE trek. Wow, I was glad I couldn’t see that while I was in the middle of it. It looked daunting and I just came through that. At that moment I think that I was blessed to be in the storm so my mind could not entertain the idea or thought of the ascend would be too difficult. It was just in a little rain.
My questions are:
Are you determined?
What are you interested in?
What are you committed to?
Can your commitment be noticed? How are you showing your commitment? Are you on time or early? Are you prepared and focused? Are you letting other things distract you? Are you completing tasks immediately or waiting until the last minute?
You can be given the tools. You can be coached and consulted. You can agree or disagree. But only you can decide!
